Well it may be a real world reading (I hope not).

If this is the case (should be doing this stuff anyway) check out my other tips on reducing the odds of exposure...

We all know that you can be hurt by these things so it's best to try to avoid any excess hazards when possible.

no its the only counter i have .. and when you say too move the screw back and forth which screw are you referring too ? i hope it this  thks all

Before you start adjusting the factory calibration, we should confirm that is your problem. I have never needed to adjust the calibration on any of my geiger counters. Blowing off the geiger tube with canned air is a good idea, no harm there. Are you still getting the higher readings?

It appears that since the voltage cap is metal and not insulated, these units can register the wrong values when a piece of dust (with moisture) falls on them...

...or spatter from a rain drop and anything else that falls on it the right way...

...the 320+ uses vents (i like it) to get a more accurate read but with a voltage control made without insulation it makes since that they "freak out" on occasion.

Place a small (VERY small) piece of (electrical) tape over it (marked R-14)...

...should be good to go!

keep posting your reads (so we know what's up) and good luck.

I would say it was a erroneous read...

...I had heard of these things "going off the reservation" before but never tested the voltage pot theory until this incident. Seems the vents can let dust and moisture in and cause a temporary false read until the moisture evaporates or the dust is burned up from the unit.

Doesn't take much in the way of a short to change the voltage and create a high read. And a micro speck of dust burning will register higher as it is consumed inside the unit.

Now that we know it should help us to better guard against moisture and dust entering these units through the vents.

Good news for everyone that this read appears to be false.

Be sure and let us know if it happens again!!!

Glad to hear your readings are back again. I assume you didn't need to adjust anything? Once I made the mistake of taking my Mazur 9000 in to an underground cave tour without having the unit in a ziplock back. As a result, the pancake geiger tube got contaminated and even after leaving the cave the readings were elevated from the radon+ exposure. After about 3 hours out of the cave, my readings returned to the normal background readings. More than concern for the geiger counter, my biggest mistake was taking my whole family on the 45 minute underground tour with me. I exposed all of them to elevated levels of unnecessary internal radiation.
