Quote:
WADSWORTH – The South Texas Project nuclear power plant in Wadsworth has plans in place as Hurricane Harvey creeps towards the Texas Gulf Coast. Up to 250 employees will endure Hurricane Harvey from inside the plant.

At press time, both units at the nuclear power facility continue to operate at full power as Hurricane Harvey approaches.

In the event the storm’s winds breach the 73 mile-per-hour barrier, Eller says their internal procedures dictate that the safety team, consisting of essential personnel only, would shut down both reactors completely.

Each hour this United States wind map changes. This information can be used to assist us in seeing what path the radiation will travel in the event of a nuclear release from the plant.

Thank you. I just recently looked at it and found a post on there from Tuesday August 29, 2017 which makes it sound like the same crew currently at the plant right now, will stay at the plant until the storm is over. Is it safe to say that this might be because of flooding in the areas around the plant?

Here is a link to the government river water level located near Bay City (looking at Google Maps) it is near the STP South Texas Nuclear Plant. http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=HGX&gage=BACT2

Here is a screen shot that I just took of it and it shows that the river has not yet crested.

While STP South Texas Nuclear Plant appears to be trying to keep the public informed of the current situation through their Facebook page since the beginning of hurricane Harvey, Beyond Nuclear pointed out something interesting in their article: http://www.beyondnuclear.org/home/2017/8/29/groups-call-for-immediate-shutdown-of-south-texas-nuclear-po.html

Quote:
The NRC and South Texas have refused to provide any public information on the status of the water level within the reservoir throughout the unprecedented rainfall that is inundating the region as flood waters continue to rise.

If history repeats itself, we should assume that bad news about a nuclear plant will not be revealed to the public until often it is too late for the public to adequately respond to it in a timely fashion in an attempt to avoid nuclear contamination.
