CLEVELAND -- The developers of 29 independently-owned gas turbine power plants in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania are warning federal power regulators that the future of competitive electric markets would be destroyed by special pricing for old coal and nuclear plants.
The FERC has given the industry, state regulators and grid managers until the end of today to comment on a proposal the DOE came up with to protect old coal and nuclear plants by allowing them to charge whatever it cost to produce the power -- plus a profit.
The DOE ordered the FER to come up with new market rules to reflect the idea that the nuclear and large coal plants contribute to the "resiliency" of the regional and national high-voltage grids.
