Hepa filter in plastic bag. GC also in a plastic bag. Timed count for 1 hour, dirty side up. 40 cpm Microsieverts .07-.16 Background in the house is 30 cpm. Earlier, I had tested another hepa filter in the house but it was closer to the heater vent and it read higher. See older post. Today's hepa filter was across the same room. |

Happy Holidays... Had a few minuets to check the board tonight and ran across your post. Here's some info on filter stuff... But first! ============== I am the dyslexic anorexic Santa clause (:-[ Ya'll know what the dyslexic anorexic Santa clause says don't ya? oh oh oh... (he he he)!!! Get it? Instead of hohoho? Never mind... ============== OK... Making sure I understand, you are using your standard (small) filter unit indoors and and removed the filter and put the counter on it for 1 hour? Good start... You really should test overnight with these small filter units and document the reads (results) somewhere... ============== Your current reads are not alarming in nature but... Number 1 (biggest things first) You (and we) need to know and state in posts and emails how long the filter was in use, do you know what dates it was filtering air? From: To: I expect you just changed it, did you record the date and time your new filter started operating? At this point if you record the start date and AM or PM it will help get us within a half a day of when the new one started filtering air. From now on (assuming you haven't been doin it) Record the date and time you change any filter. Without this information you can't know if you have a problem or not. ================ Second (HUGE ONE)... What instrument (make/model) did you use to test with? Include this info in every post and email! You can easily send this automatically by placing this info in the signature file for your netc.com and/or e-mail account. ================ I personally (for what it's worth) would try to limit plastic bags when testing. Plastic tends to collect static electricity... Cheap black plastic trash bags will kill a counter and sandwich bags are also statically charged to unsearchable degrees and don't use thin plastic wrap as they even tell you on the box it's "static cling wrap". Won't effect your actual conditions but can effect the counter itself dramatically causing false reads (chicken little syndrome) or no read (broke?) and even show reads to make you think everything's ok when it's not. and... Hey it is Christmas time so save all your plastic bags from anything electronic!!!!!! Most are static free. Here's how (I believe) you should test your filters in the future... ..and PLEASE be careful when handling any filter (you don't want to breath or eat any of this stuff) The simple way... Use a old metal cooler if you have one or can find one (the old coleman cooler shells were made from a galvanized metal lead/steel mix) and place a copper bottom cook pot inside it... The copper pot will help shield from outside XRays. This is not a scientific method but can be quickly, safely and cheaply setup. Try a old pressure cooker (like the ones used for canning vegetables) if you (or the grand parents) have one. These older pressure cookers work because of the metal alloy(s) used to prevent explosion in the event of "over pressure" / normal wear over time and are airtight.
