Yea... No doubt there is a problem at that location...

Now come the questions... I HOPE (and expect) it's a equipment problem.

I am only speaking about what I know from experience to have caused a problem in the readings. As for this stations readings in St. Charles Illinois, I have ruled them out. Why you ask? Well because I am so close and use the same setup as St.Charles. I have seen high readings myself, but nothing like St. Charles has had. Plus I believe if those readings were true, we would see other stations somewhere around it which would confirm those readings. The other reason I have ruled that stations readings out is because we have not heard from the stations operator during these readings so we can not verify them.

As greatful as I am that this operator in St. Charles has a station setup, having a station that reports faulty readings (if in fact they are) is worse than no readings. While I do not check this forum daily, my outside geiger counter gives me voice alerts for every reading over 32 CPM each minute. Everything 31 CPM or under, I hear nothing from the unit unless the internet connection is lost.

I'm with you on that.

Hard to know what the deal is over there so I wouldn't turn it off.

"stats are stats"

The prob. is the people who might think "the end of the world" (and the total stats for your study are off now if these reads are false)...

Hope this helps...

Hello from St. Charles. A few points to clear up here. With respect to my setup, it is an outdoor Holmes filter system using a GMC300 that was purchased from NETC and the config in terms of the filter setup, GMC mounting to the filtration device is what has been recommended by this forum (12 months ago) which is well documented on this forum for all to see. Pictures of my config are posted under my site id. Filter change was completed at 6:05 PM CT today. As for the spikes, I don't know what is going on. I do have a second unit, but it is not connected to a PI and if there is a way to connect the second unit to the PI so they run in tandem, one on the filter, one without that would be good to know. If it isn't supported today, would be a great feature to have two GMC's connected into a USB hub that connects into a single PI that way you can get two streaming reads from a single monitoring station - one on a filter, one without a filter but in close proximity to the filtered device. As for the filtration discussion, there is obvious disagreement among the members here whether or not the unit should be affixed to the filter or not. Be nice if you can all sort that out once and for all and agree on a standard config. So which is it, attach the geiger to an outside filtration device or not? With respect to the zip lock bag...here is another area of disagreement. It is obvious the manufacturer offers no warranties on the device with respect to outdoor elements, so the recommendation has been made going back over a year ago to put the device in a thin zip lock bag which is what I have been running with for over a year. What is the official position here, zip lock bag or no bag? If you want reliable deta, which is what we all presumably want including myself, then let's state clearly without ambiguity what the official configuration should be using precise language and corresponding detail for all of us to follow. Lastly, I purchased the GMC 300E from NETC which failed shortly after I purchased it....Harlan was involved around this time last year helping me personally diagnose the root/cause which eventually led to me sending that unit 11 or so months ago for repair. GQ decided to replace solely at their discretion with a 300 plus. That unit is NOT being used because that unit had reliability issues with the POT that controls the voltage to the tube (there is a well documented post by me about it the matter some time ago). The 300E that is located outside today is a SECOND unit I purchased from NETC as a backup and has been in service since the original unit failed 9 or so months ago. Hope that clears up the situation over here along with the various troubles I have experienced with the equipment over the last 12 months.

Look forward to your responses.

Regards,

Paul

Hello from Oklahoma City. I would like to share an experience I had with one of my units that may explain what is going on with this station. I too had similar HUGE spikes for days on end. What I found was there was a caching effecting going on with the software which would hold off reporting then show a large count as the accumulated counts caught up to current time. If I remember correctly the issue was resolved by updating the windows based NETC program. Mine was also a GMC300 which is still operational and has not exhibited the anomaly in quite a while. But it sounds like this may be operating on a PI so it's hard to say if the issue is the same. It may be something for the NETC programmer to look at. Zehd has always been very helpful sorting out my issues. But I haven't seen him on in a while so I'm not sure if he can help.

Also I want to point out that my second station is a GMC200 served by a PI via WIFI on an outdoor air filter where my equipment has been wrapped in the same plastic bags for well over a year now without issue. For what it's worth.

Thanks for the response. Numbers way up again this AM even after a filter change last night.

Great!!! :-) Your averages look better now...

12-3-14 10:30AM EST

now averaging 16 CPM

BE VERY CAREFUL with that filter unit as you never know what may be trapped in it... Probably cobalt from the magnets (hopefully)...

With the right gear you can find this out by downloading a free program called...

Theremino

Free, expert level stuff here so its a matter of "how far" you want to go down the rabbit hole...

Probably should update the site's description to not include the HEPA filter for the (hopefully 30 days) time spent off the filter.

I hope everybody knows that I am NOT apposed to filter setups. However, we need baseline numbers for this site to determine the prob(s) or validate the reads...

Great idea to have 2 for use with the netc.com platform. We could pick the public one and gather other data with the other counter full time!!!

I have to comment on setup...

Everything works fine until it breaks or it wares out...

All of these outdoor "setups" become (of course) experimental the moment you deviate the devices use from the original factory setup... Not saying this is bad, I myself am a amateur "hot rodder" with a [almost 600 HP] car in the driveway I built myself.

We should never stop experimenting and improving things especially when it comes to our environment!

But... When something unforeseen happens we need to be able to recognize it quickly in order to have the ability to respond correctly.

If these readings are accurate it means we needed to deal with it already! If it is because of a malfunction we must be able to prove this fact and "rule it out" quickly.

If your filters are contaminated to that degree you MUST take precautions when contacting (handling) them and I hope you have them "ziplocked" and stacked in a box somewhere for further study......

My attitude is to never stop experimenting!!!

This is why it is SO important to label your site setup with it's current and accurate description...

Keep "pluggin" and contact me anytime...
