Wow!!! These spikes started on the 21 April around 10 AM and another around the same time the following day.

Looked like the sun at first but I've never seen the sun make a spike like the one today...

853cpm @ 9AM? 4-23-15

Could this be wind pressures causing the motor components to overheat and release particles? Is there any melting snow getting into the unit? Is it in direct sunlight at that time of day?

We need more info from the operator...

Hey, KC you should contact him ASAP as your charts look normal.

A little more testing could tell us what's actually going on there.

Hope it's not real numbers from the unit or the surrounding environment!

By the way I can give you some info to help get these filters and units tested if you need it...

BE CAREFUL handling that thing until you know for sure!!!

Here's a quick (4-23-2015) report on the sun (and earth)...

It appears that the spikes occur roughly at the same time each morning and are brief, though today's event started earlier and lasted for about 3 hours with the peak nearly about the same time as in the previous two days.

I noticed today that Ft. Wayne and Madison WI have very similar count profiles for the past several days. Being new to this discipline, I have to ask if this is most likely from solar/cosmic influences, or could it be jet-stream influenced (particulate matter from abroad).

Also see that St. Charles is right on schedule again.

Ok so you do realize that these are BETA stations and the numbers will not match with a GC. These BETA stations measure particulate mater only and are WAY more sensitive than a standard GC. The way to tell is the popup says
(CPM of Beta particles).

I do find it interesting looking at the Madison Wi GAMA site peaks are around
8:30AM but I find no correlation with St. Charles other than the sun possibility.

Same goes with GAMA detectors as their numbers will be WAY higher than the two previous examples.

So to put it into perspective My personal "squeal points" are:

50 and above with a standard GC
Station ID will begin with 1

150 or above with a BETA station (these units have no sunlight detection)
Station ID will begin with 4
(CPM of Beta particles)

And the highest numbers will be from GAMA stations

300 and above during the daylight hours, Less at night as these stations (like a GC) also detect sunlight.
Station ID will begin with 5
"(CPM of Gamma in energy range 600-800keV)"

Of course it's all relative, (and this is the way to find waves of incoming radiation) by looking at any increase over average and correlating increases at particular times of day for the stations downwind...

==========================
So a high read from a GC is around 50

A high read from a BETA station is 150

and a high read from a GAMA station is 300
(my opinion only)
==========================

I hope this helps your understanding a little...

Sorry to have muddied the waters a bit - I was comparing Ft Wayne to Madison (not to St. Charles - I see no correlation there). I noticed that the graphs of Ft Wayne and Madison were "in sync" though at different values.

I was aware that those sites are different from the private GCs in terms of sensitivity and so forth, but you expounded on my understanding there.

Sorry about the long winded post...

...you never know who knows what so sometimes I try to just getit otta the way.

I see your point as this is beta, I wonder if it has to do with pollen.

I've read and watched videos on the re circulation of rads past through plants and the rise in beta counts as they release them with the spring budding.

I can't find the video on this right now but here's a article from japan on pollen studies...
