I always thought that you need to clean your air filter once a month to stop the dirt entering into your AC/heat unit. NOT THE CASE ANYMORE! I took out my air filter, and it was dirty, and placed the GMC-300 on top of it. The GMC-300 started rising from 18 to 54 them the beeping started. The readings were over 100, then 200+, them 400+. It level off around 500. I can not win, do I want clean air or do I want radiation free. I am killing myself without knowing it.

Please check your filter today.

Interesting...

Currently I have an air purifier running outside for air samples after the recent loss of cooling at Fukushima. They say the Fukushima cooling system is now fixed. I assume during that downtime some extra radioactive steam might be on it's way over here to the US and I hoped to get some in the outside air filter. Although on the 20th our local Byron Nuclear Plant Unit 2 shut down due to a loss of cooling system too. My outside filter has only hit a high of 100 CPM, 37 of that is my normal background. My inside filter hits a high of 280 CPM, again 37 of that is my background.

If that is a level of radioactivity that they are forced to live with than like it our not, that is their NORM level. People need to not confuse the definition of NORM (often called normal or background level) as being a SAFE level. Experts say there is "NO SAFE LEVEL" of radiation.

if a person chooses to live where water is dirty or hard water, that is the same choice when a person chooses to live in a high radiation area where the background radiation is higher than most of the country, like Bakersfield California or Billings Montana. It is not a perfect world, the Garden of Eden has long disappeared. The human race must adapt or die, only the rocks live forever!

CAUTION!!!

1) All Filters should be carefully placed into a empty trash bag and sealed before moving (even 1 step) from the area...

...If you can imagine the thousands upon thousands of tiny particles coming off these ac filters as you walk through the house with them you are already doing this.

2) Vacuum bags should ALWAYS be changed outside of the living area and cover the hole in the bag where the dust enters with a damp paper towel before placing it in a plastic trash bag. Use ONLY HEPA approved bags.

3) A P100 mask should be worn when cutting grass and blowing outdoor debris.

==================

These are the three most dangerous potential exposure activities that the average person will engage in at home.

Good luck and stay alert...

Did you know that a dirty filter cleans the air better than a clean one?

The dirt that gets trapped in the filter actually help to attract other particles as they pass by due to electric charge and the filter's pores closing up (so to speak).

The problem is reduced air flow, once you get past a certain point there is not enough air passing through to cool the compressor resulting in loss of cooling and eventual compressor failure.

This is why it is almost impossible to create a AC filter that cleans like a room filter as air purifiers do not have to perform much cooling (just a fan motor in this case).

So it's a give and take thing. A dirty filter cleans better than a new one but (after a certain point) at a cost.

Both equipment and exposure (from changing the filter) need to be considered when creating a filter change schedule.

No way to recommend a specified time frame due to differences in dust accumulation at any given location. It's something you'll have to decide for your particular unit and location. I let mine go until it's pretty dirty (sometimes 60 days or more) and have not had any problems so far (10+ years).

With your readings you need to seriously consider air purifiers.

And remember that you can "run these units into the ground" before a filter change and simply throw the whole unit out as they do not require the cooling that the AC unit does.

Good luck..
