I live in the Spokane area and have been very concerned about the high readings from the monitor there. Now I noticed a second monitor there and that readings are much lower. I am not very knowledgeable about how all of this works, so can someone explain to me why the huge difference in readings?

Thank you!

Welcome to NETC!

It helps greatly when you list the station ID/ID's your talking about. If your a chart member, a copy and past of the stations live chart link is better.

I assume the first station you mentioned has an ID that starts with a 5: which is an EPA gamma station. The second you mentioned I believe starts with a 4: which is an EPA beta station.

The EPA uses better (more sensitive) equipment than most private users own and as a result gets more CPM in the same radiation area/conditions.

Your trying to compare apples with oranges. Only compare a station against its own previous data or against patterns/trends from another station not CPM.

Thank you so much for your reply.

The first station does start with a 5: whereas the second station's ID is 1:EB6E989D

The information you have provided greatly helps me when watching the two stations.

I am glad my previously posted information helped you.

Any stations that start with 1: are private NETC station. Some can be more reliable than others obviously. Watch the weather radar and how these private stations act with the storms. You will likely see a very small rise on the indoor stations but a much more noticeable rise on the outside units on an air purifier like mine seen here:

The GMC-xxx or the PI computer are not waterproof, so the units must be protected from the weather. My units are on the porch, in a bird feeder and in a greenhouse. They have been working for about 1 year and producing much better radiation reading than if the units were inside the house next to my computer.
