As I find more useful information about radon, I recently found this list of unit of measuring radon levels very useful. More information can be found and the source link below.

What are the units of measuring radon levels?

The concentration of radon in the air is measured in units of picocuries per litre (pCi/L) or becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m3). One Bq corresponds to one disintegration per second. One pCi/L is equivalent to 37 Bq/m3.

The concentration of radon daughters is measured in units of working level (WL) which is a measure of the potential alpha particles energy per litre of air. One WL of radon daughters corresponds to approximately 200 pCi/L of radon in a typical indoor environment. However, the relative concentration of radon and radon daughters may vary from one building to another. In the extreme case 1 WL corresponds to 100 pCi/L of radon. This situation is called full equilibrium and is extremely unlikely to occur. Occupational exposure to radon daughters is expressed in working level months (WLM) and a working level month is equivalent to the exposure at an average concentration of 1 WL for 170 working hours. Measurement data are reported in either of the above units. For making comparisons between the data from different sources, the following conversion chart may be useful:

1 pCi/L = 37 Bq/m3
1 m3 = 1000 L
0.01 WL = 74 Bq/m3 = 2 pCi/L
0.02 WL = 148 Bq/m3 = 4 pCi/L
0.1 WL = 800 Bq/m3 = 20 pCi/L

I did a test and used a new HEPA air purifier filter running in the unit for 24 hours while on the floor of the basement. I put it on the floor because radon gas is heavy and I should get my highest reading there. I was able to reach 1,707 CPM with my InspectorEXP geiger counter off the filter. After reaching the peak of 1,707 it keeps going down from there as it decays away.

The digital radon only detector showed my radon level was 4.6 pCi/L and if you didn't already know, the EPA says anything over 4.0 pCi/L is considered an action level. At the time of this test I already had installed a radon mitigation pump in the basement and 4.6 pCi/L was my new low down from 17 pCi/L. I have since been able to reduce my then 4.6 pCi/L down as low as 1.6 pCi/L. This level will vary from time to time (frozen ground or rain - it goes up) but now it does stay below the action limit of 4 pCi/L.

About a year ago I let a co-worker of mine use my digital radon only detector to test his basement. When he returned the unit to me I took a picture of the reading recently saved in its memory from his test. The EPA says anything over 4 pCi/L needs some type of action taken to lower it.

To date, I do not believe my co-worker has done anything about this and I know for a fact from that his furnace brings up radon. :shock:

Here is a picture of the basement real-time radiation monitoring setup I used to figure out my radon problem. I have the same type of unit setup outside since April of 2013. Of course outside the GMC-200 geiger counter is in a ziplock sandwich bag for protection.
