Im not sure whats going on but my station was showing 133cpm on-line and on wapp4netc software. I have a CCTV camera watching my Geiger counter and it is showing 15cpm. After restaring the software its now showing the correct cpm levels. Anyone know why its doing that? Its done it before but I have never been able to verify local readings since I didn't have a camera on it.

Current setup:
Windows 7 PC on UPS. Is also my CCTV systm.
GMC-300E on Holmes Air Purifier on its own UPS
USB extender(USB to ethernet cable), powered 4 port USB hub(only geiger is on it), shares the above UPS.

I may try connecting the geiger directly to the computer but this means moving it away from the window.

Nice setup there! I wish that I could explain what is causing your problem, but I can't. I use the Raspberry Pi for my system.

Here's a possible explanation...

The netc software is close to but not completely "real time".

If you click on your station and then wait you will see the popup box disappear. That is the refresh rate.

So if your counter is by a window and the sun hits the unit directly for a short time it bumps the reads for that time period. Then (just spitballin here) if the sun is no longer on the unit when it refreshes it shows the lower (accurate) number. Do not let direct sunlight hit your counter.

Until the website refreshes it would show the higher number from a few moments before. The counter always shows the second by second reading while the website has not refreshed to reflect the reading you see with your camera at that moment.

Kinda a long shot but stranger things than that can happen (fukushima?)...

By the way the best indoor readings are acquired from low in the room.

Better to place it close to the floor in a shaded area for more sensitive and accurate readings indoors.

Good luck and let me know if I can help...

It sits on top of my cabinet(chest level) next to the window. It faces away so it never gets direct sun light on it. I also keep my blinds closed. Think I will try to move it. I have a space near the floor for it next to my computer but it will be closer the the middle of the house and away from the window. I'll have to figure out how to move my camera so I can still get a live feed.

I (personally) would move it closer to the floor in a fully shaded place...

Just my opinion but it will serve all of us (you, me and them) better that way....

I looked at your station and we need another placement to confirm your readings for sure...

Good too see that people like you are paying attention...

Keep it up!!!

There is a bug in the connection to the win4netc software that makes the reading 120 cpm to high. Just reset the software and reset the gc and most of the time it will restart back to the proper readings. This happens alot when moving the cables or GC and the software gets false readings. I have no programmer to fix the problem and we must work around it.

For the best detection, outside on a HEPA air purifier is actually best.

I like the idea of outdoor stations on air filters and all but it's really "off the books" when it comes to tested reads. What I'm saying is that the counter is tested and designed to be used a certain way and when you experiment with it no matter what you get it's an experiment...

WAY too many variables to be proven accurate...

...and I really should be putting one of these (outdoor purifier units) together NOW as I live in Charlotte and the reads here are crazy bad as we speak (7-23-15)!

But, we just don't have the proven history to confirm anything when it comes to any of these experimental units....

My inside unit has been very high in the last few days so a new build for outside seems to be a good idea...

But (again) it doesn't really prove anything as these units have WAY TOOO many variables to consider them as a real (proven) reading! Burn (Cobalt?) from the wind blowing through the unit, the slow gather of particles that bump the reads, electric interference, etc. These things make these rigs too experimental to call them "real world"...

If you simply place it close to the floor in a fully shaded place you'll get a proven read versus a experimental reading that can't be proven...

And, if you change a filter after a real release you WILL expose yourself (and possibly your family) to concentrated (gathered) forms of these poisons...

Just my opinion...

A geiger counter either detects radiation or it dont. What are all these "WAY too many variables to be proven accurate..." that you speak of?

I use my previous data to determine what my areas average level is and anything above that is a "concern" level for me & my family. When that level is reached, we stay inside to be as safe as possible. Plus it allows be to double check the levels with my other equipment, not hooked to the HEPA air purifier. I feel this is a much better route to take during an event to attempt avoiding exposure.

I normally wouldn't say anything but this is a private (netc station) forum so here goes...

variables?

indoor counter outdoors in the weather

indoor counter sealed in a plastic bag (outdoors?), a definite no no (and voids the warranty)

indoor air purifier outdoors

wind pressures burning the motor from most any direction

moisture variances that can not be accounted for

water leaks

Cobalt magnets subjected to stresses not designed for

overheating from the sun

interference from electric currents

grounding issues (as most indoor purifiers are NOT grounded)

weather changes (lightning and static)

bugs encroaching the unit

filters that were not designed to be outside

risks of servicing the filters from both electric shock and contamination

I could go on and on but don't have the time right now and i think i made the point.

Not saying these units are bad, simply stating the facts...

I like experiments as they tend to lead to the truth (what science is all about) but experiments are just that, you can't take the data as fact, AND you definitely don't want to use this kind of experimental data to alert (or alarm) anyone!

Hey, the beta reads should be sufficient to alert us all that there is something going on as of late, and these units (epa beta stations) are the "real deal" when it comes to particle radiation.

Anyway, hope i didn't upset you or anyone else, just pointing out the obvious.

Let me know what you think and I look forward to hearing from you.
