Just popped in to see if anyone noticed the train of spikes crossing the country today...
Also noticed that admin was worried about the yellow pollen (from evergreen trees like Pine). I tested samples from California a year ago and found no counts above background.

I was wondering if scintillator detectors require regular maintenance/sensor replacement? In reading about them it was noted the dramatically higher energy from gamma ray collisions resulted in physical changes to the sensor's crystalline structure.

On the differences between the NETC and EPA readings: we all understand the need for establishing an ambient level benchmark by taking background radiation into consideration, but it seems to me any gamma ray readings over a hundred are not normal background radiation and shouldn't be classified as such.

Yes, if San Diego is sitting on top of a Uranium 238 deposit then it will have a much higher nominal reading but that doesn't make it normal or safe, which rad-con 1 at face value implies. The way I read it, people in San Diego should be getting the hell out ASAP, rad-con 1 or not.

I post this last comment in memory of Shayne Callahan, an old friend from college. One month ago I moved into a new apartment and discovered in an old box an unopened letter she had sent me seven years ago after I'd been hospitalized with a major illness. The doctors had told my sisters I wouldn't survive. They closed out my home and put everything into storage until my fate was determined. Shayne had heard about me from my sisters, who had gone thru my rolodex and notified everyone. She got an email from them just as she was preparing to move out to her new home located in the marina in San Francisco Bay. Me, I was out of it for weeks and her letter ended up in storage along with boxes of stuff I likely wouldn't ever need or see again.

Shayne was a remarkable woman from my past who had always kept herself physically and mentally fit. I picked up the phone and learned she had moved out to the West Coast. I soon tracked her down, and when I called to tell her about this wonderful seven year old discovery of hers and to belatedly thank her, a young woman answered. I asked to speak to Shayne and the young woman said she was Shayne's daughter-in-law and asked me who I might be to her? I told her who and why I was calling and she said she was sorry to tell me Shayne had died yesterday from a brief bout with bone cancer. I was floored. She said it had been a surprise to Shayne and everyone in the family too. She'd gone in for a check up and left with a shocking diagnosis - stage four metastasized. Reading these comments here about San Diego's radiation counts, I am just now comprehending why this Fukushima tragedy feels like such a personal event. It is. Damn. The irony of it all.

Netc.com is still under my control. Do you want me to sell my soul for a few pieces of silver. I will keep it running as long as I can. Thank you all for the small payment of $20. We would like any donations too, just send it to staff@netc.com using PayPal. Thanks again.
Harlan

Harlan, we are most pleased with the system, and thank God for you every day. Don't ever let anyone make you think that you are not appreciated by everyone. If they are not happy, then they should do alternative. I for one want to thank you for being caring enough to have such a system available. You are wonderful!
Thanks!

As you see Bangor, Maine is in an Alert radiation level because the last place in the the US that was safe from Japan's nuclear meltdown is now getting radiation levels that are increasing. Sorry, there is no safe place to live. The EPA is raising the radiation standards so that all places in the the US are now safe, what a fool the EPA thinks we are!!!

How long do you think it will take for the EPA to raise the standards in Maine? I noticed last week, there were a couple of different places with Alerts, one being Ohio, I believe. I meant to make a note of what was considered normal for them, but didn't.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to find the EPA's site in downtown Portland. It looks like it's in the Congregational Church, probably the bell tower. I really want to get to the bottom of where their high readings are originating from.

Addendum: this is the 3rd time I've had to sign in. Is there a time limit? I lost two posts (good for you guys probably).

I have had the same problem before. Make a habbit of using your copy/clipboard on long posts before you hit the submit button. At least you can just paste it then.
